A wedding documentary engagement session at Balboa Park

I know I know… Shooting an engagement session at Balboa Park isn’t uncommon to say the least, but we all know it’s not the location that makes the pictures, the photographer and the couple do…. UNLESS, you are at Balboa Park and the location fits in the style of the wedding. We’ve all heard movie nerds talk about how “the city” is really the other main character of the movie. I’ll admit that when you have Balboa Park in your backyard, it’s hard not to take advantage of the many many locations you can find to make great photography.

I met Stephanie and Tyler at a bridal expo at the Milagro Winery and I immediately clicked with them. They are stylish and fun and interested in art and most of all wanted a documentary engagement session that had the feel of Italian photos from the 60s and I could not have been happier to oblige. We met in the Rose Garden and made our way through Balboa Park’s main paths. We even got a churro at the end to keep in the spirit of the documentary feel of the session. Plus, what’s more San Diego than integrating Spanish Colonial architecture with churros from a cart. it felt like we were bridging decades and jumping back and forth between old and new. It was a wonderful time.

That’s the beauty of doing this type of sessions… it is refreshingly classic and modern at the same. I love the idea that I can bridge styles, nostalgia, and moods by going with a different approach to the work we do.

I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them. :)
