Episode 5 of my newsletter is out
I recommend it… click the image and get reading! People, I’m not saying this because I think it’s good but rather because people tell me it’s good.
I don’t think you’ll regret it. :)
Love ya.
Friends...
I'm happy to let you know that this newsletter is among the top 5 newsletters written by a French photographer in Eastern San Diego.
I knew I could do it.

To recap for the new arrivals:
It'll always be about what's going on in my photography world
I'll send something only when there's an interesting update.
I think you'll be relieved to know that I'm not really selling anything.
it'll be snarky.
This is really so that we can stay in touch because Instagram gives me anxiety.
It'll be inconsistent in quality. ;)
Today, 3 things and a quote... but only about 1 thing.
Here goes...
A.
I talk about a word:
I'm not trying to sell you on my services but I do want to sell you on a word that kind of defines me as a photographer: meaning.
As in: what do the photos I make mean to... me, you, somebody else? I've written about this before here and here but... ... with every new shoot I go to, I am reminded that what I do means something: for me, for my client, for their kids... it just does. In the end, that's really all I want from the art I produce.
As a photographer, I work in the service of others but I want the people I work with to hire me because they believe in my genuine interest in their story; the way it appears in front of me... so, not the "perfect" picture but perfect in the sense that it is more real and more meaningful.
I've been wanting to talk about my work as a family documentary photographer to you guys... but I didn't want to be sales-y about it. I just want to convince you that family documentary photography will -in the end- be what will actually matter to you 20 years from now. it's beautiful now... but give it 5 or 10 years and look at that album again and wow does it bring those photos to another level. See how much younger you looked; reminisce over aunt Becky that is no longer with you today; notice how your kids have changed. A print, an album will bring that all back for you but a picture hidden and stored on your phone will not have the same impact for you.
Example:
a month ago, I did a "Day In The Life" with one of my favorite clients. We had an amazing time and the photos came out beautiful but after I edited the photos and designed and ordered the album, I moved on to the next shoot... until this morning when I received the album that I just opened. Pfff... the feeling was indescribable. Which is why I wanted to share this feeling with you guys today. Perusing through the album made me feel like my work mattered.
It meant something to me. (Boom! Call back! Now that's just good writing).
B.
That album I was talking about:
Here are 5 spreads from the ADITL ("A Day In The Life") album I was just talking about above.
(Forgive the fact that these are grabbed quickly with my phone).
Honestly, I cannot wait to deliver this album to my client. I want to see their faces.
C.
A photo I love:
Why I love this photo: talk about meaning! I guarantee you this photo will be important to both dad and son way after they've forgotten it even happened. This photo shows a really intimate and genuine moment between a father and his son sharing a big sandwich and cheering their sandwich before they chow down. You see tenderness, you see love, belonging, family, etc. It's all there.
and ... D.
Here's a quote I like:
"Family Documentary Photography is real. It's honest. It's not about what you are like but who you are like."
-- Me
That's it for today.
